One of our favourite day trips from Malaga is a spot about 60 km from the city. Located in the heart of the Guadalhorce Valley, the Caminito del Rey is a world-famous hiking route that winds through the spectacular scenery of the Desfiladero de los Gaitanes natural park. The trail offers a thrilling adventure as it hugs the cliffs and crosses narrow suspended walkways.
The Caminito del Rey (it translates to King’s little path) takes between 3 and 4 hours at a leisurely pace. Enough to take in the stunning views of the Desfiladero de los Gaitanes (Gaitanes gorge). And the turquoise waters of the Guadalhorce River too. Of course, the excursion is always done in small groups and under the continuous guidance of a professional guide.

The history of this wonderful place dates back to the 19th and 20th centuries. At that time, works were carried out in the area to create a series of railway and hydroelectric infrastructures. In fact, the Caminito del Rey was the path that the workers had to take every day to transport the material and carry out their work. All this, together with the spectacular nature of the place, resulted in this jewel: a combination of the human and the natural.

To continue with the day trips from Malaga we propose at Coeo, we will now head towards the environs of Antequera. The Torcal de Antequera is a geological wonder located just 30 kilometres north of Malaga. This awesome karst landscape is a unique limestone mountain range that has been sculpted over millions of years by wind and water erosion. The result is a surreal scenery with spectacular rock formations and panoramic views of the surrounding countryside.
A day trip to the Torcal de Antequera promises a journey into otherworldly terrain. Entry is free and there are even signposted trails. However, to fully enjoy this unique natural wonder, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, it is highly recommended to have a specialised guide. If you’re wondering what to do in Malaga in February, you should know that it’s the time for the famous Malaga Carnival. And we really do love this celebration in Spain! Especially when it’s in Malaga… For nine days and nights, the city hosts one of its most fun and entertaining events. A pagan festivity in which music, light, and colour are always present. Carnival floats, parades, competitions, and activities, the unique “Batalla de las Flores” (Battle of the Flowers), and, to top it all off, the “Entierro del Boquerón” (the burial of the anchovy). This great fiesta begins forty days before Palm Sunday, so its dates vary from year to year.
*In the rest of Spain, it is celebrated the burial of the sardine (instead of anchovy). This is due to the fact that Malaga’s inhabitants are known as “boquerones” (anchovies).

We’ll start our list of Christmas plans in Malaga with the most classic, but also the most enchanting onel! Explore the magically decorated city centre. Take a stroll among the spectacular Christmas lights on Calle Larios, Malaga’s iconic shopping street. Walking under the illuminated arches is like stepping into a fairy tale. The nightly light and music shows are also a unique sensory experience.
Needless to say, Malaga’s Christmas markets are also a must-see. The main market on Paseo del Parque offers a wide variety of handicrafts, handmade gifts or delicious seasonal treats. It’s the perfect place to buy original souvenirs and get a taste of the local culture. And to get into the true Christmas spirit, a visit to the Nativity Scenes or belenes, a cherished Christmas tradition throughout Spain, is also a must. Head to the Cathedral or the Municipal Nativity Scene to see these beautiful creations.

One of our favourite Christmas plans in Malaga has to do with gastronomy. So good and tasty in this region, it is even more so during the festive season. In fact, food lovers will find Malaga’s Christmas a real treat. Savour a hot chocolate or try turrón, a traditional Spanish nougat that is present on every table during these days. Delight yourself with other sweet dishes like pestiños (honey-coated fritters), roscos de vino (wine-flavored pastries), or polvorones (crumbly almond cookies). And all this without forgetting the tasty Christmas meals.
To complete this delicious plan, we are proud to announce the imminent opening of our new café-bar and restaurant, Bartola Brunch & Bistro. A new space to eat and drink where you can enjoy gourmet fast food, tasty brunches and original cocktails in two different atmospheres. 3. Experience the Verdiales Festival
On 28th December, the Verdiales Festival brings a burst of colour and joy to the city. This traditional folk celebration is characterised by music, dance and colourful costumes. Groups of performers, known as pandas de verdiales, compete in lively displays of song and dance, showcasing a centuries-old tradition unique to the region and even the entire country. The vibrant energy of the festival is one of the highlights of the season and a wonderful way to connect with Andalusian culture.
So, on December 28th -April Fool’s day in Spain- you will have the opportunity to see up to 28 pandas de Verdiales in Puerto de la Torre, one of the 10 districts of the capital of Malaga. Our Coeo Team will inform you how to get there. It will be a really different experience!

4. Take a day trip to Ronda or Nerja
Continuing with our Christmas plans in Malaga, and even though Malaga City offers a lot of fun, we really liked the idea of suggesting you to get to know a little more of the treasures of the region.
