Semana Santa in Málaga: A Celebration of Tradition and Devotion

Semana Santa (Holy Week) in Málaga is one of the most spectacular and deeply rooted celebrations in Spain. Taking place from April 13th to April 20th, 2025, this religious and cultural event transforms the city into a breathtaking display of devotion, music, and tradition.

What is Semana Santa?

Semana Santa commemorates the Passion, Death, and Resurrection of Jesus Christ. In Málaga, the celebration is particularly special due to its grandeur, the participation of thousands of devotees, and the historical brotherhoods (cofradías) that have been organizing these processions for centuries.

What Happens During Semana Santa?

Throughout the week, stunning religious processions fill the streets of Málaga, featuring elaborate thrones (tronos) carrying images of Christ and the Virgin Mary. These thrones, some weighing several tons, are carried by hundreds of people, known as hombres de trono. The processions are accompanied by marching bands, penitents in traditional robes, and an atmosphere of deep emotion and spirituality.

The most famous processions include:

• El Cautivo (Monday): One of the most beloved processions, drawing thousands of spectators.
• El Rico (Wednesday): A unique tradition where a prisoner is pardoned and released.
• La Expiración & La Esperanza (Thursday): Among the largest and most spectacular processions.
• El Santo Sepulcro (Good Friday): A solemn and emotional tribute to the death of Christ.

Every night, locals and visitors gather along the streets to watch these processions, which take place in the city center, particularly along Alameda Principal, Larios Street, and the Cathedral area.
