Feria de Málaga

Welcome to Málaga, a city like no other. Where culture and tradition result in a vibrant place, always full of life. If you’re planning a visit in August, you’re in for a true incomparable treat: the legendary Feria de Málaga! This fantastic festival is one of the most anticipated events on the Costa del Sol, attracting both locals and tourists from all over the world.

At Coeo, we’re deeply in love with Málaga and with its Feria. Let us guide you through the highlights of this spectacular celebration, ensuring that your stay with us is unforgettable.

Málaga

A historic celebration

The Feria de Málaga, also known as the Malaga Fair, dates back to 1487. This celebration commemorates the Catholic Monarchs’ re-conquest of the city. Over the centuries, it has evolved into a grand cultural event, mixing Andalusian traditions with modern festivities. The Feria takes place every year in mid-August, transforming this vibrant city into an exhibition of colour, music, and joy for nine days of non-stop celebration.

Feria de día

The Feria de Málaga is unique in that it offers two different atmospheres: the daytime Feria (Feria de día) and the Nighttime Feria (Feria de noche). The Daytime Feria takes place in the heart of the city, particularly around the historic city centre and the iconic Calle Larios. During the day, the streets come alive with flamenco dancers, horse-drawn carriages, and locals dressed in traditional Andalusian clothing.

As you stroll through the city, you’ll come across the fabulous casetas, offering a variety of tapas, refreshing drinks, and live music.

The good vibes are contagious! Feel free to join the party, dancing some typical sevillanas or simply enjoy the lively atmosphere from a cosy café terrace.

One more thing. August in Málaga can be rather hot. Make sure to drink plenty of water, wear sunscreen, and also consider a hat during the Daytime Feria. You’ll have the outfit!

Feria de Málaga

Feria de noche

As the sun sets, the Feria de Málaga moves to the Cortijo de Torres fairgrounds, located just outside the city centre. Here, the Nighttime Feria truly comes to life. The fairgrounds are illuminated with thousands of colourful lights, creating a magical atmosphere that you’ll be willing to explore.

Thrilling amusement rides, games, performances, casetas… The Feria de noche is a playground for all ages.

For those looking for a more traditional experience, there are also equestrian shows, bullfights, and exhibitions showing the rich cultural heritage of Andalusia. The combination of ancient traditions and contemporary entertainment makes the Nighttime Feria a truly unique experience.

By the way, daytime or nighttime, trying the local specialties is a must. Pescaíto frito, jamón ibérico, or tortilla de patatas, among many other delicacies. Pair these with a glass of Málaga sweet wine or rebujito (a refreshing mix of sherry and lemonade) to complete your experience. Your tastebuds will feel like paradise!

Some useful tips to enjoy the Feria de Málaga

  • Dress for the occasion. The Feria is a time for dressing up, so don’t hesitate to embrace the festive spirit. While you don’t need to go full Andalusian, wearing comfortable yet stylish clothing will help you blend in. If you’re feeling adventurous, consider some traditional flamenco clothing or at least a flower in your hair 🙂
  • Siesta is a must. If you wish to make the most of your time at this celebration, make sure you take a siesta. Not only because of the necessary rest between the Feria de dia y Feria de noche, but also for the high temperatures during this season. Pace yourself so you can enjoy both festivities.
  • Bring some cash with you. While many places in Málaga accept credit cards, it’s wise to carry some cash, especially when visiting the casetas at the fairgrounds. Small purchases like drinks, snacks, and rides are often easier to pay for with cash.
  • Join the dance. The Feria is all about celebration, and locals love it when visitors participate in the fun. You’ll often see people dancing sevillanas! So even if you don’t know the steps, clapping along to the rhythm and trying a few moves will be appreciated. And you’ll have real fun!
  • Parking can be challenging. So you’d better plan your transportation. If you stay at Coeo, you’ll get to the Daytime Feria on foot, as we are located quite close to the famous Calle Larios, in the heart of the city. Otherwise, buses, taxis, and even special shuttle services to the Nighttime fairgrounds are available. Parking can be challenging these days, so using public transportation is often the easiest way to get around.
  • Always respect local customs. The Feria de Málaga is a celebration of local culture, so it’s important to be respectful of customs and traditions, and especially in religious or more traditional settings.
