Malaga is the birthplace of the world-renowned artist Pablo Picasso. The museum dedicated to his work is a must-visit for any art lover coming to our city. Opened in 2003 and housed in the beautiful Buenavista Palace, the Picasso Museum features over 285 artworks spanning more than seven decades, from the artist’s early still lifes to his later abstract pieces.

Playa de la Malagueta - Coeo Pod Hostel in Malaga

It’s well known that Malaga boasts some of the best beaches in Spain, with crystal-clear waters and soft, sandy shores. Treat yourself to a relaxing day at the beach, sunbathing and swimming in the Mediterranean. La Malagueta Beach is just a 15-minute walk from our Malaga hostels.

6. Local cuisine

Bartola Brunch & Bistro

Our beloved city is famous for its delicious tapas culture. So let us recommend a few of our favourite dishes, absolute must-tries during your stay in Malaga.

  • Croquetas (fried roll of food leftovers, bound with bechamel sauce).
  • Boquerón al limón (fried anchovies with lemon).
  • Tortilla de patatas (Spanish potato omelette).
  • Berenjena frita con miel (fried aubergines with honey).
  • Salmorejo (cold tomato and vegetable soup).
  • Tinto de Verano (red wine, soda, a slice of lemon and ice cubes).
  • Cerveza Victoria (local beer).

One of the great things about being in Spain is how easy it is to find a good spot for tapas and enjoy the very best of our local cuisine. For example, at our very own Brunch & Bistro Bartola, located right inside the same building as our Hernán Ruiz hostel. And just upstairs, you’ll find a bar with a small rooftop pool, perfect for cooling off with your favourite cocktail under the warm Malaga sun.

7. The Gibralfaro Castle

A 24-minute walk from our accommodations in Malaga

Gibralfaro Castle

The Gibralfaro Castle was built to house troops and defend the Alcazaba during sieges, especially due to the widespread use of artillery from the hilltop. Originally a fortress and lookout over the port, this ancient castle (which dates back to Phoenician times) has watched over the city for centuries and offers breathtaking views of Malaga.

It’s without a doubt a must-visit!
